PHYSICAL HEALTH
The HeartWorks programs that foster physical health are designed to promote healthy choices for fitness, nutrition and health.
Pharmacy Fund: Provides prescription and non-prescription medications needed for children whose families are unable to afford them.
Physical Exercise: Strives to increase physical activity and develop resources and activities to promote physical fitness in children and their families.
School Health Educator: A health educator works in each public school to address poor health choices, including tobacco and substance abuse, obesity and promiscuity. The School Health Educator presents education in each school at least weekly as well as provides similar programming to each after school program.
Food Lion Food Donation Program: Provides nutrition to families during emergency situations. At least 100 different families have been helped through this program. Each month, Food Lion donates approximately 400 lbs of meat and 375 lbs of breads and deli foods.
Kids Cafe: A partnership with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina that offers nutritious meals and snacks to our after school programs.
Harvest Hope Project: Strives to teach families the self-sustaining skills of organic gardening, composting, seed saving and food preservation and canning. The HeartWorks Harvest Hope Project helps families learn how to supplement their grocery bills with fresh, homegrown, healthy produce.
